2 Corinthians 2:1-11<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

2\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 2\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 3\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 4\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 5\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 6\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 7\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 8\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 9\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 10\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 11\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A device can be thought of as being a tool to carry out a certain function. But in this context (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) the implication is that the device is primarily mental. He is clever and crafty. He possesses ingenious subtlety, but he also has a\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>modus operandi<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0(particular way of doing something)\u00a0that presents us with clues about his influence and tends to give him away, rendering much of his cleverness inoperative and making him easier to defeat.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

2 Corinthians 10:3-5<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

<\/a> 3\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 4\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> 5\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The idea is to catch him as he begins to use his devices to twist us mentally to agree to the line of reasoning that he wants us to follow. If we can catch it as it begins, we will not be entrapped by it. We know that Adam and Eve did not catch it, and they were led astray.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One of a Christian’s primary defenses against\u00a0Satan, of course, has to be a prior awareness of his\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>modus operandi<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u2014particularly his desire to turn good into evil. Perhaps nothing could be more devilish than to do such a thing. And in this very context, Paul suggests that Satan can get to a person through a spiritual quality that is good.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We know his voice<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

John 10:27<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

<\/a> 27\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We are taught to know better<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

John 14:26<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

<\/a> 26\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We know what to examine<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1 Samuel 16:7<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

<\/a> 7\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>But the\u00a0Lord\u00a0said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the\u00a0Lord\u00a0looketh on the heart.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The word helps us weed Him out<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

James 1:22<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

<\/a> 22\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/strong>But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.\u00a0(Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The apostle desires them to receive the person who had done wrong, again into their communion; for he was aware of his fault, and much afflicted under his punishment. Even sorrow for sin should not unfit for other duties, and drive to despair. Not only was there danger last Satan should get advantage, by tempting the penitent to hard thoughts of God and religion, and so drive him to despair; but against the churches and the ministers of Christ, by bringing an evil report upon Christians as unforgiving; thus making divisions, and hindering the success of the ministry. In this, as in other things, wisdom is to be used, that the ministry may not be blamed for indulging sin on the one hand, or for too great severity towards sinners on the other hand. Satan has many plans to deceive, and knows how to make a bad use of our mistakes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
